Folks from the Worker’s Action Centre (Toronto) and Steel City
Solidarity (Hamilton) will be converging on Jamesville Community
Centre on Monday, December 5th from 7:30PM – 9PM to discuss their
strategies & experiences in standing alongside precarious and low-wage
workers in their fight for fair wages…

WORKER’S ACTION CENTRE

The Workers’ Action Centre is a worker-based organization committed to
improving the lives and working conditions of people in low-wage and
unstable employment. The Centre provides information and education to
enable workers to organize for change.

Our work is guided by these principles:

– maximum involvement of the people affected,
– developing leadership among workers,
– shared learning, and
– action for change

PAC stands in solidarity with G20 Conspiracy Defendants

The Political Action Committee of CUPE 3906 stands in solidarity with our friends and allies who have faced these spurious charges over the past months, and with all who have struggled against forceful silencing and the criminalization of dissent. We believe these charges represent broader political attacks and we extend our deepest appreciation to those charged for all the difficult choices they have had to make and the care with which they have done so.
The events of the past year and a half have shown again what many of us have seen repeatedly and in other forms – that there is endemic violence in the state system of (dis)order and that justice is something that needs to be claimed directly and daily, but also that there is much work that continues and will continue to be done to challenge oppression and exploitation, and to build just ways of living together.
We thank those who have faced these charges for sharing their thoughtful words and for reminding us that the costs of our struggles are not borne in equal ways. We also want to take the opportunity to echo their sentiments of support for those for whom state violences and criminalizations are a daily reality and a daily struggle.
Indeed, we will meet again and anew to continue these struggles.

PAC Film Screening and Open House, Thursday September 29th, all welcome!

The Political Action Committee of CUPE 3906 warmly invites you to our film screening and open house, Thursday September 29th in the Wentworth Lounge (beside the Phoenix).

As part of thinking about the struggles around us and the oppressions we are often complicit in, we’ll be showing a screening of Sewatokwa´tshera´t: The Dish with one Spoon (2008). This documentary by Dr. Dawn Martin Hill (Mohawk, Wolf Clan, academic director of the indigenous studies programme at McMaster) features indigenous voices discussing colonialism, land struggles, and the ongoing reclamation at Kanonhstaton/Caledonia begun in 2006. Building from the insights of these voices, we also hope this can be an opportunity to stimulate discussion about our colonial inheritances and think about just ways of moving forward together.

Door open at 6pm, film screening at 7pm.
Coffee, tea and light refreshments provided. We can also provide bus tickets for those coming from off campus.

Everyone is invited to attend and encouraged to bring ideas for what they want pac to be involved with.

Interested in learning more about Hamilton? Come out to the Tour of Struggle, a radical tour of Hamilton’s political and social struggles and histories.

We’ll be meeting at McMaster outside the CUPE office (Wentworth Hall) at 5pm for a trip around the city that ends at This Ain’t Hollywood for Dance, Dance, and Revolution! a radical hip hop event. If you’re interested, please RSVP to politicalaction@cupe3906.org to reserve a seat.

Solidarity Picket at 1005 Lines, September 10th

PAC members are organizing another Saturday Solidarity picket at the 1005 lines for next Saturday September 10th. Folks can meet at the bus stop at King and Bay at 10:45 to head over (we have bus tickets available for anyone who needs them). Or, if you’re interested in biking out there, the lines are at Burlington St E at Wilcox. Usually we stay out there for a few hours chatting and walking the lines.

According to the most recent update, http://www.uswa1005.ca/USWLocal1005_News_Release_September_1_2011.pdf , US Steal has agreed to meet and put a deal on the table on Septmeber 13th. Given this and the recent actions of the bricklayers local 1, it would be great if folks want to head out to show support ahead of this meeting.

Hamilton CopWatch Community Jam and Fundraiser!! Sunday August 28th

Who: Hamilton CopWatch is a direct action organization dedicated to forcing greater accountability upon Hamilton police and equipping members of our community with the knowledge and skills to deal with police injustice.
What: This event is an opportunity for Hamilton CopWatch to connect with other interested and/or concerned Community members. We are looking to discuss CopWatch, share experiences, discuss community concern, and connect with folks who are wanting to participate in any way.

Where: Beasley Park, located at Wilson and Mary Street. We’ll be in the heart of park, near the fountain!

When: Sunday, August 28, 2011. From 12pm – 4pm.
